Shiroka Luka Village


Shiroka Luka Village is located in the Rodopi Mountain, 23 km north-west from Smolian and 16 km from Pamporovo. The village has received its name from the old-Bulgarian word "лъка", which means curve.

Shiroka Luka is famous for its beautiful, authentic Rodopi houses, located on the both sides of the river. The local construction people were well known all across the country. The old houses have the typical Rodopi architecture style - two floors with inside wooden stair. Most of the rooms are large, with wooden seats next to the walls and small windows. The most famous houses are "Sgurowskata house", " Uchikowskata house", "Grigorowskata house".

The village is known also for its folklore. Here were born one of the most famous singers and bagpipers. In 1972, in the village is built National School for Folklore Arts.

Two of the emblematic places to visit are Ethnographic Museum "Zgurovski konak", furnished like a wealthy house from Rodopi area since the end of 19th century, and the church "Uspenie Bogorodichno", built in 1834 for a period of 38 overnights from the whole population of the village.
